Домены .PRO
.pro (professional) is a generic top-level domain. It was created in 2002 and
is operated by the Registry Services Corporation. The intention of the domain is to signal to web visitors that the website
owner is a professional with valid credentials, but so far .pro has not been popular.
.pro domains are very expensive compared to other domains. Professional credentials must be verified, and the
domain costs $350, with a one-time $100 registration fee. The .pro serves as an official certification that the website
owner's credentials are accurate.
.pro has three second level domains: .law.pro, .med.pro, and .cpa.pro, reserved for lawyers, physicians, and
certified public accountants, respectively. Direct second-level registrations were later opened up, with restrictions.
Registrations are processed via accredited registrars.
Some registrars have exploited a loophole whereby .pro domains may be registered on behalf of a third party as long as
there is a nominal registrant with proper qualifications; in this manner, unrestricted .pro registrations were offered using
the credentials of somebody affiliated with the registrar. Much debate has ensued about the propriety of such registrations.
RegistryPro is the exclusive operator of the .Pro top-level domain selected by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and numbers (ICANN). RegistryPro's top-level domain is the first and only domain extension exclusively for professionals on the Internet.
RegistryPro recognizes that a professional's primary asset is the trust of their clients. This is easy to establish in person, but difficult to convey over the Internet. To create trust online, electronic communications and transactions must remain private and secure - RegistryPro offers the solution!
.Pro Product Information
Qualified professionals will be able to purchase any of the following products:
.Pro Third-Level:
Members of the medical, legal, accounting and engineering professions, licensed in the United States, Canada, Germany or the United Kingdom, are eligible to register for third-level .Pro domains. Registrants can secure profession-specific third-level names such as name.law.pro, name.med.pro and name.cpa.pro. Each registrant's identity and professional license information will be verified against relevant public and third-party databases prior to domain name activation. Additionally, each domain is issued with a digital certificate and each registrant will have the choice of an SSL or email (s/MIME) certificate.
.Pro Second-Level Resolving:
Registrants who provide multiple professional services (e.g. legal and medical services) are eligible to register a resolving second-level name (e.g. companyname.pro). After purchasing and qualifying for two third-level domains, in two distinct professions (e.g. name.law.pro and name.med.pro), registrants may request their desired second-level name. Each resolving second-level name is issued with a digital certificate and each registrant will have the choice of an SSL or email (s/MIME) certificate.
.Pro Second-Level Redirecting:
Registrants who provide professional service in the medical, legal, accounting and engineering professions and have registered a third-level domain under that profession, registration can also be performed on the second-level for a redirecting name (e.g. companyname.pro redirects to name.law.pro).
After purchasing and qualifying for one third-level domain (see above), registrants may request their desired redirecting second-level name. In this case the second-level name will require a redirect to the third-level professional designator that corresponds to the registrant's professional area. Each redirecting second-level name is issued with an email (s/MIME) digital certificate.

.Pro Defensive Product Information
Individuals interested in a .Pro domain who a) would like to protect a trademark or service mark that was issued before September 30, 2003, b) would like to use a .Pro domain at a future date but do not want to run the risk of losing their desired name, or c) are waiting for the availability of .Pro domains in their country or jurisdiction, will want to investigate the four available defensive registration products.
Defensive Registrations have:
- A four-year registration term
- Do not resolve on the DNS
- Block out all matching domain names
With a Defensive Registration, registrants can reserve and block a name now, and by providing professional eligibility information at the time of registration can easily convert a Defensive Registration to a live domain name at a future date.
Four types of defensive products available to meet the needs of registrants:
.ProBlock Intellectual Property Defensive
Name Registrations:
The .ProBlock product is available to trademark owners interested in blocking an exact trademark or service mark across all .Pro profession-specific strings (e.g. name.law.pro, name.med.pro, name.cpa.pro). For owners of distinctive marks, this product may be particularly attractive, since it blocks the mark in all current .Pro strings, including future .Pro domain name strings that may be added (e.g. dev.pro, cfp.pro, arc.pro).
.ProGuard Intellectual Property Defensive
Name Registrations:
The .ProGuard product is available to trademark owners interested in blocking an exact trademark or service mark for one individual profession-specific string (e.g. name.med.pro). A .ProGuard can easily be converted to a live domain name by supplying professional eligibility information.
.ProReserve Defensive Name Registrations:
The ProReserve Defensive Name is designed to allow potential professional registrants, located in a jurisdiction outside of the initial launch, to register a .Pro name defensively and protect the name for future use.
- Example: A Japanese professional wants to protect a domain name that he/she may decide to register when .Pro domains become available in Japan. The professional may register a .ProReserve Defensive Name Registration in the interim, which could be converted to a live name when the appropriate local verification mechanism is established and the Registrant provides all necessary information to satisfy those specific requirements.
.ProDefense Defensive Name Registrations:
This product is available to professional registrants who want to block their specified second-level domain name (e.g. companyname.pro). This product may be attractive to professions because it allows the domain name to be direct, more concise and enables people to easily search for the name on the Internet. Instead of having to specify a particular third-level profession, .ProDefense allows searches to simply use a second-level domain name.
Trademark Eligibility Requirements for
Intellectual Property Defensive Registrations
The Registrant must own a current (non-expired) trademark or service mark registration and abide by the following conditions:
- The trademark or service mark must have national effect. European Community Trademarks, or United States trademarks are eligible, while state or local registrations such as US State registrations are not.
- The trademark or service mark must have been issued prior to September 30, 2003.
- The desired domain name must be identical to the textual or word elements of the trademark or service mark.
- Potential domain names must consist only of letters, digits and hyphens. (A hyphen cannot be in the first or last position).
- Third-level IP domain names must be identical to the textual or word elements of the trademark or service mark.
- In general, alphanumeric ASCII characters (letters and digits), plus the hyphen character, in the textual or work elements of the trademark or service mark will be considered in determining whether an Intellectual Property Defensive Registration is identical to the textual or word elements of the trademark or service mark, and other characters will be ignored.
- Acceptable exceptions include:
- 1. A space between the textual or word elements of the mark, the space may either be replaced by a hyphen or removed completely in the Intellectual Property Defensive Registration (e.g., the trademark "Example Mark" becomes the Intellectual Property Defensive Registration "examplemark" or "example-mark").
- 2. When the trademark or service mark contains an ampersand (&), the ampersand may either be replaced by "and" or removed completely in the domain name (e.g. "AT&T" matches either "atandt" or "att").
- The same service or trademark may be used to register multiple Intellectual Property Defensive Registrations, provided that each Intellectual Property Defensive Registration meets the previously described matching criteria.
